Exploring options to realize this film / art / sound installation, 2017 & 2018

Due to the long lasting covid 19 pandemic the format of the actual idea is being transformed into a feature film.

North Of The Future (N.O.T.F.) is a proposal for a feature-length film and multi-screen art film installation which explores Celan’s life an art. Paul Celan is widely regarded as one of the most significant poets of the 20th Century. Although his work is highly influential and referenced by artists such as Anselm Kiefer, Michael Nyman and many others, his name is little known outside academic and literary circles in the English speaking world. In 2020 it is 50 years ago that Paul Celan decided to take his own life and 100 years ago that he was born. In the period 2017 & 2018 both film maker Gideon Koppel and producer Alexander Godschalk will explore the options to realize this film / art / sound installation as a tribute to Paul Celan. This process was concluded at the end of 2018 and since the beginning of 2019 we are pleased to announce & confirm that the N.O.T.F. will be produced & realized & presented by Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. It means that the role of producing & realizing the art installation will be taken over in full by the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden due to ongoing other project commitments by Alexander Godschalk. His role as stimulator and initiator of this unique project will be completed now that this art work has found a good “ exhibition home”.
The covid 19 pandemic forced the makers of the North of the Future art / film installation to let go of the original format, namely to show it in a museum and or site specific location context into a feature film setting only. As a film requires different financial & funding budgets, it takes time to let go of the present situation and to look for alternative realisation options. As the important year 2020 in relation to the project itself has passed, the realization pressure transforms into a different one, namely from art installation into film which can be seen or viewed on tv or filmhouses or cinema’s. That choice is still to be made after the fundings have been established to make the actual film. The project will therefore become a long lasting one; starting in 2017 and probably realized and presented in 2023 !
